Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides)

Evergreen fern with dark green fronds rising from a short, creeping rhizome.  Fronds have a distinctive pinnae that resemble the toe of a Christmas stocking.  Common to woodlands and shady, rocky slopes.  Fiddleheads have silvery white scales and stand out in early spring.
