Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii)
A clumping perennial grass with coarse, fuzzy flowers that bloom in late summer. The inflorescence varies in color from bronze to a gray-blue, while the entire plant has multiple colors, from red to brown to purple, depending upon the time during the growing season. The fuzzy flowers produce tufted seeds that are carried a short distance by wind. Seeds are eaten by songbirds and small mammals.
