Sensitive fern
Common fern of river bottoms, marshes, floodplains, and sunny meadows. Small fern (1-2 feet height) with deeply lobed fronds that arise from a threadlike creeping rhizome. Can form dense stands. Fronds die back after first frost in late summer/early fall, giving rise to the name ‘sensitive.’
