Arrow arum (Peltandra virginica)
Somewhat infrequent to Vermont, otherwise common to the shallows of ponds, lakes, and marshes. Arrow-shaped leaves emerge from a bulb-like base and rise above the water 1-2 feet. Seed pods (ping-pong ball to tennis ball sized) grow throughout the summer. When ripe, the pods break open, revealing numerous floating seeds encased in a gelatinous coating. Seeds are prized by muskrats, wood ducks, and other waterfowl.
