Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris)
Large-frond fern common to floodplains and rich woodlands. Fiddleheads emerge in the spring and are a delicious edible, especially when fried in bacon grease and lightly seasoned with garlic and pepper. Fronds emerge from large, upright rhizome, with also produces runners that form new rhizomes, helping to create a dense carpet of ferns.
