Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica)
A common, non-descriptive woodland sedge species. Small grass-like leaves grow to a height of 4-6 inches. Flower stalks emerge early in the spring, and the seed heads follow shortly after. The sedge spreads via stolons and readily carpets the shaded understory that becomes attractive in mass plantings.
