Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

A woodland ephemeral with a single large irregular leaf that wraps around the base of the plant. A solitary upright flower emerges from the center. The rhizome is a vivid red and emits a stain (potentially toxic) when crushed when cut or torn.
