Hardstem bulrush (Schoenoplectus acutus)
Perennial bulrush along the shallow margins of ponds and lakes to a depth of 6 feet. Stems are rigid compared to softstem bulrush. Seeds are eaten by waterfowl, and muskrats use stems to form dens. A dense rhizomatous mat makes it useful for erosion control.
