Shallow sedge (Carex lurida)
A perennial sedge common to swamps, marshes, and the margins of streams and ponds. Multiple inflorescence emerge from a tuft of green leaves. The inflorescence contains inconspicuous flowers that form a single spur with multiple seeds. The spur turns golden brown in the late summer that readily shatters. Seeds are consumed by woodcocks, songbirds, waterfowl, and small mammals.
