Virginia wild rye (Elymus virginicus)

A perennial grass common to floodplains, edges of woodlands, and openings of shrub thickets.  A single flower cluster emerges above the main tuft.  The grass turns an attractive golden in the fall.  Seeds are consumed by songbirds. Host to branded skipper moths.

Note: seeds have barbed awns that may cause injury to dogs.
