Wild rice (Zizania aquatica)
A member of the grass family, wild rice grows in fresh and brackish water shallows of ponds, rivers, and estuaries. An annual plant, the seed germinates in muddy substrates under inundated conditions in mid-to-late May, and then emerges from the water in early-to-mid June, growing to a height of 2-3 meters. The seed ripens in the late summer and shatters, providing a valuable food for gees and ducks, making it an ideal species for duck pond owners.
